Abraham Lincoln letter fetches $3.4 million

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A stirring 1864 anti-slavery letter from Abraham Lincoln was auctioned for a record $3.4 million on Thursday, Sotheby's auction house said, setting a new record for the 16th U.S. president.

Lincoln's hand-written reply to a petition by children to free "all the little slave children in this country" surpassed the previous record for a Lincoln manuscript -- the $3.1 million for a document sold by Christie's in March 2002.

It was purchased by an American collector bidding by telephone, Sotheby's said.

"Please tell these little people I am very glad their young hearts are so full of just and generous sympathy, and that, while I have not that power to grant all they ask, I trust they will remember that God has, and that, as it seems, He wills to do it," Lincoln wrote in the letter.

Sotheby's called the letter "arguably Lincoln's most personal and powerful statement on God, slavery and emancipation."

He was responding to a petition signed by 195 children.

In 1862 and 1863, Lincoln signed two executive orders known together as the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared free slaves held in some Confederate states. The 13th Amendment to the Constitution, which formally abolished slavery was ratified in December 1865, eight months after Lincoln's assassination.

The letter was the centerpiece of an auction entitled "Presidential and Other American Manuscripts from the Dr. Robert Small Trust."

AFA responds to McDonald’s regarding support for the homosexual agenda

As a Christian organization, the American Family Association always seeks to be honest, accurate and completely forthright in the information we pass along to our supporters.

We expect corporations in this country, especially those that position themselves as “family-friendly” businesses, to do the same.

It is in that spirit that AFA wishes to respond to the e-mail that McDonald’s USA has been sending out to the public in response to the controversy over the company’s partnership with the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC).

The statements in bold below are those made by McDonald’s, followed by AFA’s responses.

“At McDonald’s, we treat all our employees and customers with dignity and respect regardless of their ethnicity, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or any other differentiating factor.”

We are not telling McDonald’s who they can hire to work for the company, nor are we demanding that they stop serving Big Macs to homosexual customers.

This issue is about the world’s largest fast food chain allying itself and partnering with an organization that lobbies Congress to enact laws that we feel can be used to repress religious freedom or undermine the sanctity of marriage.

“While one McDonald’s employee is affiliated with the National Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC), McDonald’s is in no way ‘aggressively promoting the homosexual agenda’ as suggested in the newsletter.”

To refer to Richard Ellis, who is the vice president of communications for McDonald’s, as “one McDonald’s employee,” as if he is a teenager flipping hamburgers, is disingenuous at best.

While “aggressively” is admittedly a subjective term, AFA believes that giving money to and partnering with a homosexual lobby organization is certainly an enthusiastic promotion of the homosexual agenda.

“The NGLCC is a non-profit organization dedicated to support economic opportunities for the gay and lesbian business community.”

It is quite clear from the NGLCC Web site that that organization not only supports “economic opportunities” for homosexuals, it also lobbies Congress on a wide range of issues related to the gay agenda.

“In addition to McDonald’s, there are numerous other Fortune 500 companies that serve as corporate partners with NGLCC.”

AFA rejects this “everybody’s doing it” excuse offered by McDonald’s, and is asking the fast food company to remain neutral in these controversial skirmishes of the culture war.

“All references to comments from Jim Skinner, McDonald’s CEO in the Action Alert Newsletter are complete fabrications.”

Our Action Alert assumed that Mr. Skinner’s comments were specifically addressing the promotion of the gay agenda, when they were not. We apologize for any confusion this has caused.

However, the actual comments attributed to Mr. Skinner were not fabricated, but instead came from McDonald’s own Web site. They were a direct quote of Mr. Skinner’s comments, posted by Vice President Bob Langert, made by Mr. Skinner at the Annual Shareholders’ Meeting in 2007.

When Mr. Skinner said, “We have an obligation to use our size and resources to make a difference in the world,” we now have come to believe that part of that vision, as evidenced by McDonald’s partnership with the NGLCC, is the promotion of the gay agenda.

URGENT: From the desk of Albert Howard

I greet you in the name of Yeshua the Christ in whom I have put my trust and invested all of my senses.

From the inception of the vision that was given to me to start
www. AlbertHoward.org (recently recognized by the United States Library of Congress as one of America's top websites to be preserved in their archives) in February 2007 and to become an official Republican Presidential Candidate,
I can do nothing but reflect on the goodness of my Savior in the land of the living.

During these past 14 months, the Holy Spirit has taught me many deep, critical and personal lessons about myself, fair weather friends and politics.

My lovely wife Ingrid has supported me and this campaign wholeheartedly even in the most dangerous and life threatening times. She has sacrificed seeing our daughter Danielle in the intensive care unit at Boston Children's Hospital to be left in the hands of the limited knowledge of our medical community.

On Saturday, January 5, ABC World News Tonight interviewed me and asked me why I was so 'crazy and radical' about my beliefs. My simple answer would be: I prayed to Him who sits on the throne and unto the Lamb and He heard my petition and healed our Danielle Maria and better was the end of a thing than the beginning thereof. The best that the world had to offer couldn't heal my first born daughter. I serve the one true Creator of heaven and earth.

And with that thought I now come to the meat and substance of this letter.

I am asking you to be silent for a moment wherever you are and ask yourself 'Is this campaign worth maintaining or is it just a waste?'

It is with regret that the main reason why we have not been effective and piercing with the Department of Justice and the Secretary of State of New Hampshire is because of milk toast citizens who have the money and resources but don't want to pay for first class representation and attorneys.

With all my heart, and my Heavenly Father as my witness, I believe that I have listened and obeyed in every area of this campaign to what Yeshua has instructed me to do.

I was honored to be used as a conduit to be the first African-American to receive a New Hampshire Primary Recount.

Your unprecedented ability to raise $55,600 etc; sent shock waves thru the political realm.

However, all of the candidates that remain in the race always say they will remain faithful as long as they have supporters and finances.

At the writing of this letter my family and I currently have hardly any food and no place to stay.

I WILL NOT seek assistance from the welfare system or government. Ingrid and I are currently working two 9 to 5 jobs.

Therefore, without a sign of monetary donations to AlbertHoward.org at the 'contribute now' link http://alberthoward.org/contr.aspx within 24-48 hours, I will be forced to write the Federal Elections Commission in Washington, D.C. with a letter of termination regarding this campaign. Furthermore, In addition, I will cut all ties with the efforts of continuing the N.H. Ballot Law Petition Appeal Hearings involving the Department of Justice and the Secretary of State of New Hampshire.

(This is a closed letter to supporters that will stay private for about 48 hours before I put it up on the 'New Hampshire Recount' link unless money comes in. I will not put this letter up if the response is favorable.)

If you want your donation to be publicized specifically regarding this letter, we will be happy to do so.

To speak with us personally, you may request our cell phone number by email.

PLEASE SERIOUS INQUIRES ONLY

I have fought the good fight and I have kept the faith,

Albert Benjamin Howard

Urge Michigan House Speaker Andy Dillon to stop blocking Parental Rights!

As a resident of your district, I'm writing to urge you to support House Joint Resolution NN, the Parental Rights Amendment, which reads in full as follows:

"Parents and legal guardians have a natural and fundamental right to direct the care, education, and upbringing of their children. No government action shall burden, abridge or hinder this natural fundamental right unless it is in furtherance of a compelling governmental interest and is the least restrictive means of furthering that compelling governmental interest."

HJR NN has 80 original co-sponsors, more than enough bipartisan support to win the two-thirds vote required to place it on the ballot so that the people of Michigan have a right to vote on it this November. Obviously, the only way it won't pass is if it's never allowed to come up for a vote.

My family and I urge you to press Speaker Dillon and Chairman Condino to stop blocking consideration of this bipartisan proposal obviously supported by an overwhelming majority of the House. Please urge them to immediately schedule HJR NN for a vote in committee and by the full House of Representatives.

Thank you, and please report back to me when a hearing and vote is scheduled.

McDonald's CEO: Company will put full resources behind gay agenda

Dear Chairman McKenna:

I am surprised to learn that McDonald's has decided to put their entire corporate strength behind the promotion of the homosexual agenda. I'm asking McDonald's to remain neutral in the culture war. Your efforts should be in providing the finest fast food products possible, not in a political battle - especially helping promote an aberrant and destructive behavior. No more McDonald's for our 8 children until further notice.
